Thirteen Blue Flags for Gran Canaria in 2012

Amadores: One of Gran Canaria's 13 Blue Flag beaches in 2012

Great news for Gran Canaria! The island now has eleven Blue Flag beaches and two Blue Flag marinas, awarded by the not-for-profit Foundation for Environmental Education. This is an increase of two on last year.

The island's Blue Flag zones are:

  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: Las Canteras and El Confital beaches.
  • San Bartolomé de Tirajana: San Agustín, Maspalomas, Meloneras, El Inglés and the Pasito Blanco marina.
  • Telde: Hoya del Pozo, Melenara and Salinetas beaches.
  • Mogán: Mogán and Amadores beaches and Mogán marina.

Beaches and marinas only get get awarded a prestigious Blue Flag if they have consistently high water quality, good safety records and facilities, quality environmental education and information resources, and top environmental management practices.

Overall the Canary Islands were awarded 45 Blue Flags for 2012, an increase of seven on last year. Spain got a record 638 Blue Flags.
